Sean Kiely Limited Edition 7″ Lathe Cut Record
Sean Kiely’s latest release is two brand new covers, recorded by the Jersey City artist and his band in just a day while passing through Nashville on tour this past summer. Side A is a jangled, rock-shuffle rendition of Angel Olsen’s lovely, monasticIota; the flip side is an adaptation of Reid Anderson’s instrumental Pound For Pound. Sean wrote lyrics to the composition over the last year with great respect for the original record by the band The Bad Plus.
Recording took place August 31st, 2015 at Haptown Studio in Nashville, with producer & engineer Roger Moutenot behind the board. Roger’s long list of credits includes seminal records by Yo La Tengo, Gillian Welch, & Bill Frisell. The session features longtime collaborator Bobby McCullough on upright bass, and the outstanding Jason Bemis Lawrence on drums. On Iota, McCullough does the work of a whole string section, while Lawrence holds down a steady groove. With Pound For Pound, the band plays sparely, leaving as much space as possible for Reid Anderson’s exceptional melodic and harmonic phrasing.
The tracks were mixed at Water Music in Hoboken by the great John Agnello (Son Volt, Kurt Vile, Phosphorescent). John brilliantly mixed Sean Kiely’s solo debut Your Logo, My Logo, out this past July, an album No Depression calls “one of those sublime and unassuming efforts that sneaks up on you until you find it won’t let go.“
